To the Glory of God In Loving Memory of Lieutent Commander Edgar Christopher Cookson. V.C:D.S.O:R.N. of H.M.S. Clio. Killed in action Sept. 28. 1915 Aged 31. He was shot down while endeavouring single-handed to destroy with an axe the boom placed by the enemy across the river Tigris near Kut-el-Amara. For this act of most conspicuous gallantry His Majesty King George V conferred on him the Victoria Cross From his childhood he knew and loved this Church: it is fitting then that his name should be commemorated on these walls. "This is the happy warrior: this is he that every man in arms should wish to be."
